6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Japan
July 2014 – JAPAN – A strong earthquake hit Japan’s northern coast near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake early Saturday triggered a small tsunami and injured at least one person. Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the 6.8-magnitude quake struck 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima. The quakes was later downgraded to a 6.5 event by the USGS. The 4:22 a.m. (1922 GMT Friday) quake shook buildings in Tokyo, about 250 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of the epicenter. A 20-centimeter (8-inch) tsunami reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa and Ofunato, about 50 minutes after the quake. Smaller waves were observed at several other locations along the coast. CDC discovers botched shipment with bird flu, closes down labs
July 2014– HEALTH – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday said it has closed two laboratories and halted some shipments of dangerous disease samples after discovering new safety breaches, including one that involved the dangerous avian flu. The CDC, which is already under fire for safety mishaps involving live anthrax, said samples that were sent in March to the Department of Agriculture for research were contaminated with the highly infections virus H5N1. The flu samples from the Roybal Campus in Atlanta were destroyed as soon as the CDC realized the mistake. CDC Director Thomas Frieden said he didn’t learn about the incident until this week. “I’m upset, I’m angry, I’ve lost sleep over it,” Frieden said. “The revelation came in a new report where the CDC outlined the findings of a separate investigation into the mishandling of anthrax last month in Atlanta.
